Black Theatre Commons

national archival project

We will begin the process of identifying and archiving important artifacts from black theatres across the nation, in particular African American legacy theatres. The process will incorporate online surveys and in person plenary sessions.

national black theatre fund

With the goal of improving the vitality and sustainability of Black theater institutions, BTC will establish a Black Theatre Fund to ensure equitable and strategic distribution of funding opportunities, alongside capacity building strategies. Based on recent surveys and feedback from over 40 Black theatre organizations, the primary areas of need include: Stabilization, General Operating Support, Professional Development, Mentorship Programs, Succession Assistance, and Regional Fellowship/ Internship Programs.

black theatre commons annual convening & funder briefing

BTC will assemble Black theater professionals to roll out our initiatives and host the first BTC funders briefing.  This will be an informative and interactive conversation about increasing equity and access for black theatres and practitioners.  We will identify funding strategies, what’s working, where gaps exist, and the potential impact on the field.

exploring a new collective bargaining agreement for theaters of color

Similar to the League of Resident Theatres, BTC in partnership with other advocacy and service organizations will develop an agreement with Actors' Equity Association (AEA), the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society (SDC), and United Scenic Artists (USA) that allows culturally specific theatres and interested practitioners to work together under less stringent economics while maintaining union standards.
